Introduction

Joyfully Serving Christ!

The International Christian Fellowship (ICF) is made up of Christians from around the world who worship in English each week.  Our church is located in the traditional fishing port of Portimão and in walking distance from the well-known holiday resort of Praia da Rocha, in the Algarve region of southern Portugal.

The ICF includes people from a number of different countries and various church backgrounds. Worship and other activities are generally conducted in English although not all of the members have English as their first language. A significant proportion of those attending worship are holidaymakers or longer-stay visitors.

We own our own property at Rua N.S do Amparo, 8500 Portimão, Portugal in the Cedipraia Shopping Centre across the street from the Piscina Municipal , Portimão, thanks to a grant from the International Baptist Convention. The ICF is a member of the International Baptist Convention, the Convenção Baptista Portuguesa and Tarrant Baptist Association in Ft. Worth, Texas USA. An elected church council deals with day-to-day matters. To comply with Portuguese practice, general meetings of the church are chaired by a specially-elected sub-committee whose members are not on the church council. Financial scrutiny is conducted by a similar specially-elected audit sub-committee that reports to the general meeting.

 Sunday Family Worship

We worship in English at 11:00 a.m. each Sunday morning.  We are always pleased to welcome residents and visitors alike whatever their background or church affiliation. The service usually includes choruses, a talk for the children, prayers, Bible readings, hymns and an address for the adults. A Sunday School for the children operates during part of the service and coffee is provided after the service for a time of fellowship.

Beach Missions

The Mineral Wells mission trip to Portimao in 2006 established strong relationships for us with the city authorities.  The United Beach Mission (UMB) conducts over ninety beach missions each summer in the UK and other countries in Europe, but never before in Portugal.  We presented the director of UMB to the city cultural directer and city sports director who invited them to come to the Praia da Roche beach one of the formost beach destinations in Europe with hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer.

United Beach Missions in UK organized the first Portuguese beach mission in June 2012.
They were joined by volunteers from team of volunteers from FBC Mineral Wells in July 2013.
These beach missions were so successful that they were expanded from one to two weeks in July - August 2014.

Christmas Shoe Boxes

One thousand nine hundred twenty four (1924) Christmas Child Shoe Boxes were collected from across the Algarve and Lisbon in 2013.  John and Gill Rhodes organized this wonderful project with helpers from many local churches, schools, fire departments, and social organizations.

NEW!  Starting in 2014 everyone in Portugal has been encouraged by Samaritan's Purse to start our own independent Christmas Shoe Box collecection and distribution to needy children in Portugal.

Label boxes for either a boy or a girl and their age. Then fill the boxes with appropriate Christmas gifts and lots of love.  Because these will be given locally,  No money should be included in the boxes for transport and there are no customs restrictions as to what gifts you may give.

Sunday December 7, 2014  ICF in Portimao will collect collect Christmas Shoe Boxes in the morning service and will take them that same evening in to the United Christmas Service Val Judeo.  There they will be collected and distributed by the Salvation Army to needy children in Portugal.

The ICF has supported mission work in Portugal through the Portuguese Baptist Convention, in Europe through the International Baptist Convention (IBC), in Nepal through Missionary Debbie Zaayman, and in Lesotho, Africa helping Jill Kinsey operate two Children's Centres for AIDS orphans.

Three volunteers, John Rhodes, Adrian Dixon and Marina Hardy have taken several mission triips to Jill Kinsey's homes for orphans in Semonkong and Pulane in the mountains of Lesotho. Marina's video of her trip gives a good overview of the work in Pulane.

History

The ICF was founded in 1991, at the suggestion of the Portuguese Baptist church, to meet the needs of visitors and residents who might be more comfortable using English as the medium of worship. The then pastor of the Portuguese church, Norman Harrell, an American missionary, agreed to begin services in English and took on pastoral responsibility for the ICF. More recently, the Portuguese church has spawned several other congregations:  three congregations in Lagos (Portuguese, English & German) and two more congregations in Portimão meeting the needs of migrant workers from eastern Europe who worship in Russian and Romanian.

Membership

Membership of the ICF is based on a simple statement of faith which is agreed by all the members, new converts being baptised by immersion in accordance with the traditions of the host church.
